About the Artist

Entry Description: This commissioned concept design for a new biological research laboratory in western China (the Institute for Nanobiomedical Technology and Membrane Biology at Sichuan University) borrows formal cues from microcellular structures found in nature to create architecture that expresses the explosive growth of understanding in the life sciences today. The main programmatic goal is to create a living memorial to biology - an active world-class research center that stimulates conversation between members of the scientific community and laypersons around the world. The Institute will house 250 scientists from across the life-sciences engaged in a wide range of multidisciplinary work, from investigating basic molecular mechanisms to developing treatments for disease.
